What is an EMG Test?
EMG stands for Electromyography. An EMG test is a diagnostic procedure we use to assess the health of your muscles and the motor neurons that control them. Motor neurons are nerve cells that transmit electrical signals which cause muscles to contract. If they aren't functioning properly, it can cause a variety of different issues.
The test is designed to measure how well muscles respond to the electrical signals emitted to motor neurons. It's a diagnostic test that includes a needle inserted directly into a muscle to record electrical activity. Another part of an EMG test, known as a nerve conduction study, consists of electrode stickers applied to the skin to measure the signals traveling between two or more points.
Do You Need Nerve Conduction Studies?
Our medical doctor may decide to order an EMG test if you're exhibiting symptoms of a muscular or neurological condition. The symptoms we watch for include tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, muscle paralysis, twitching, muscle pain or cramping, or certain types of limb pain that can't be easily explained. The test can be used to diagnose a certain condition. Also to rule out other conditions. There are many different diseases and conditions that can affect muscles and nerves in the body. Sometimes an EMG test is the best way to find out exactly what's going on.
If you experiencing any of these symptoms, don't hesitate to contact us. We can assess your condition and perform the necessary testing to find out what's happening. As with most medical issues, it's always best to take a proactive approach. Use the technology that's available to get a firm diagnosis so we can proceed accordingly.
