What is an EMG Test?

EMG stands for Electromyography. An EMG test is a diagnostic procedure we use to assess the health of your muscles and the motor neurons that control them. Motor neurons are nerve cells that transmit electrical signals which cause muscles to contract. If they aren't functioning properly, it can cause a variety of different issues.

The test is designed to measure how well muscles respond to the electrical signals emitted to motor neurons. It's a diagnostic test that includes a needle inserted directly into a muscle to record electrical activity. Another part of an EMG test, known as a nerve conduction study, consists of electrode stickers applied to the skin to measure the signals traveling between two or more points.

Do You Need Nerve Conduction Studies?
